we are going to a wedding next weekend and i need to get something wear. the invite says "cocktail dress" what does that mean exactly? in the states no one ever puts that on the invite, at least none of the weddings i have attended. you just get dressed up in a nice outfit/dress. thanks!! |

All I know is that in Australia (at least in the GC) the women dress up to go to the shopping centre. So I assume that it means that you should wear a nice dress and heels. |

Funny you mention this...because I recently received an invite to a wedding back in the US that was "cocktail attire" on the invite...and my sister's wedding back in June they didn't specify a dress code but when I asked my sister if she was worried, she said nowadays people are pretty savvy about knowing what's appropriate...funny when her husband's 15 year old neice showed up at the Catholic church looking like she was ready to go club hopping...but that's another story... I recently attended an Aussie wedding back in April on the Gold Coast...I have to tell you I was shocked...the wedding was specifically a cocktail style reception at a hotel, so you can assume cocktail attire...well the range of women's dresses I was more than shocked about...granted it was a fairly young wedding but I'm talking 40 or 50 year old women related to the bride and groom in incredibly short and non-age appropriate dresses...and there were younger girls around my age (mid-20's) in very casual sun dresses and flip flops... On the contrast last year I attended a wedding in Melbourne that was at a very nice restaurant overlooking the Yarra...everyone related to the bride and groom were in formal length dresses...I came in cocktail attire and my partner felt embarassed he didn't bring a suit jacket, but there was no specification on the invite. My rule of thumb at a wedding is always dress a little bit more dressy if you're not close enough to the bride and groom to specifically ask them what the attire is. |
