with all my family and friends posting about the labor day holiday I am really craving american bbq food. yes we have had many bbq's here but it's not quite the same. In my family the traditional bbq consists of corn on the cob, bbq ribs, hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, pasta salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, shrimp cocktail and a few homemade dips. yummm!!!!!! here whenever we go to a family bbq its cold corn from a can, cold beetroot, pineapple slices, steak, sausages, grilled mushrooms, tabouli, and a tossed salad. very different from the US!! I do make some american dishes sometimes, but it still isn't the same. |

I just go ahead and have lots of the family bbq's here, and do it MY way! Nobody complains, and they keep coming back. If there's something they can't live without, they're welcome to bring it. |

Share your pasta salad and macaroni salad recipes - I'm always interested in what other people do especially now that we have different ingredients to work with. I get grief from the Aussies for always bringing a bag of potato chips to any BBQ that I go to...

Ambrose: 500 g rotini pasta (fusilli or whatever you want to call it - the multi-colored spirals!) 1 head broccoli 1-2 bell peppers (I used a red and an orange) Italian salad dressing Mayo Olive Oil Cook the pasta until just barely al dente; you want it to have some bite to it. Dice the peppers finely and toss it with the cooked pasta. Chop the broc into bite-size pieces and steam it (put it in a small saucepan with an inch of water; cover and boil until tender). Mix 1.5 parts mayo to 2 parts Italian salad dressing, with a teaspoon of olive oil (you may need to find your own mix, though!). Dress while slightly warm, then do it again when cooled. Refrigerate, let set. |

So, can you buy American style mayo at woolies? I bought a squeeze tube of mayo (aussie style, I don't know) and obviously don't use it much because I haven't noticed a difference. If I make potato salad, might I cringe?? |

aussie mayo is sweet, unlike american mayo. the american brands are s&w or best foods. there are other ones called whole egg mayo which i think is similar. my potato salad recipe calls for sugar so if i used aussie mayo i would omit the sugar. |

I think the mayo tastes way different - but I picked up a HUGE jar of American mayo at Costco. I have a BBQ this weekend so I'm planning on making an American style salad! |

I'm SO jealous! I hate the mayo here too. Paul Newman's is about the closest I can get here. I think I'm going to try to make some. |

My woollies sells Best Foods Real Mayonaise imported from the USA. Tastes exactly right, or as near exactly right as I remember it. Says it's made by Unilever who actually have a presence here in Oz so I find it strange that someone else is importing it. Greg |

OK, so Unilever also make Hellmans. I don't really understand why the two different names and why the US Unilever site does not mention Best Foods. Hmmmmm, |

not sure if it is still true today but my dad told me when we lived in Cali back in the 80's they had Best Foods not Hellmans. I don't know why they sell under 2 labels.... |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellmann's_and_Best_Foods ok so this answers the question as to why there are 2 labels for the same product:) |

I tasted our "Kraft" Mayo the other night and it was not so great. Fine on a sandwich, but I don't think I'd like a big ol' potato salad with all that sugar and tang. It seemed closer to Miracle Whip than mayo. I'll have to try the brands mentioned above. |
