Story here: Qantas Engine Failure QF32 was bound for Sydney with 433 passengers and 26 crew on board when the engine exploded, damaging the wing, and raining debris over Batam, Indonesia, which is across the Strait from Singapore.

Yes, and they had to exit off one airbridge - that must have taken forever! The A380 is having a lot of teething problems. An engine that new shouldn't fail so badly.

Shy, I know the First Officer on that flight. They were bloody lucky, the dmage--I have read a copy of the report, was GREAT deal worse than thought. The Trent 900 A and B series engines have a maching fault in an oil line. The C series appears not to be affected, however the Trent 1000 ( to be used on the 787) had the same problem. QANTAS is only running the 380 on the Aussie UK service. They can make derated thrust takeoffs from Australian Airports, Singapore and Heathrow. They are not yet re certifying them for use on the Australia LAX run, as they need to make a full TOGA power (TakeOff and GoAround) takeoff from LAX. May be some months yet before they are back in full service. I beiuelve that the Nacny-Brid Walton will be parted out (scrapped) at Singapore |

Cathy, the damage was shocking, they were bloody lucky! Qantas to resume A380 services to Los Angeles on Jan 16. Slowly, and hope to have them all back in service soon after. |

I've seen a picture of the part that failed. As a machinist and having an idea how high tech modern aerospace machining is, I have a bit of trouble understanding how the part was made wrong to begin with. And then, how in the heck did it get past inspection.... Further, knowing they had a problem, why did Rolls Royce not pull out all the stops to locate and fix all suspect engines. Qantas has had more than a few incidents in the last couple years, perhaps the result of offshoring of maintenance? But from everything I've read, the flight crews are absolutely top notch and have handled all incidents very well. A great description of what the crew went through is HERE Pic of the failed part HERE |

I think that Qantas flight crews go through more extensive training than those at other airlines. I suspect that most of them were in the RAAF too. |

elsja could probably confirm/refute that, her husband flies for Qantas. But elsja hasn't been around much lately.

Not true... A quote from Andrew "Absolute bullshit. A very small percentage comes from the ADF with the rest coming from general aviation, other airlines and the cadetship. Probably 5% max from the ADF" I have been a bit MIA. First it was wedding planning and now a new job- but I'm still around:) |

Agree, especially since Q hasn't hired any RAAF guys in over two years. The only place that RAAF pilots are in the majority is in the RAAF. |

This is what my hubby believes is the reason for so many incidents involving Qantas. |

Geez, Another Qantas engine failure.... We've been flying United because hands down, for us, they've always been the cheapest. I was going to treat myself to a Qantas flight when I make my final trip, but starting to rethink that. Whatever is responsible for Qantas' string of problems, I fear is sooner or later going to result in a not so happy ending... Maybe Air New Zealand... Edited by janders1957, Jan 17 2011, 05:08:48 AM.

ack! Yeah, the new flight they're adding to DFW when they stop SFO was looking rather attractive, but I think I'll stick with Air New Zealand, thanks!

Hmm, didn't know they are going to drop SFO. Wonder why? Maybe they want to use the A380 for the USA runs? I'm not sure SFO can handle the A380... Happen to know how soon this move will take place? |

You would have a valid point if Offshore maintainence was done by some third world Airline. QNATAS offshore maintainence is done by Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, and Lufthansa, alol of which are first rate maintainers. The Trent 900 A and B series were quietly being phased out. I think RR took a gamble. The same, or very similar problem has ocurred with the Trent 1000. The 1000 sereis is due to power the Boeing Dreamliner. A 1000 had an uncontained failure on the Test stand. This has further pushed "Nightmareliner" deliveries back |
