oh yeah...that is definitely a weird combo here. My co-workers ask me about it, so they've heard about it but have never actually had it themselves.

one of my many brothers used to eat peanut paste (as us older south aussies call it) and apricot jam sandwiches. to the rest of us, it was, and still is, weird...

LOL. I thought it was gross when I was a kid in Wisconsin, but I'm not a jam/jelly kind of person.

and you should see the looks I get when I take an apple or banana out of the fruit bowl at work and sit down with the peanut butter jar and the fruit.

co-workers who know me by know have gotten over it, but the "newbies" do the look thing and go "eeewww"

I tell them "don't knock it till you've tried it... after all you eat that crap you call Vegemite"

cheers,
Marilyn

I've met a few aussies here that like PB&J but everyone of them also puts butter on it!! and then they call it a PB&J... no... it's more like a PB&B&J :p

*sigh* I sometimes don't get the obsession with putting butter on all bread products before they are consumed here...

:agree: I've had to use this line a few times on my ILs.

Yes, many consider PB&J disgusting. It's also doubly disgusting if you use a serviette or a paper towel as a plate.

I tell them... you can eat your spread made from "black salty yeast extract that smells like armpit" on your toast.

I'll stick to my peanut butter, made from Peanuts, that smells like peanuts, thats the color of peanuts.

That surprises me - when my kids were young 25 years or so ago, I used to spread peanut butter on apple slices or celery sticks for them, and I myself was eating banana and peanut butter sandwiches long before that. Maybe I'm not your average Australian?

I grew up in Pennsylvania eating peanut butter on celery too and I only discovered that it might be a weird combination when I suggested making it for the salad section in the cafeteria I worked for in Dallas, TX. None of the other staff had ever heard of eating peanut butter on celery and the thought of it seemed very strange and disgusting to them.

As a kid I also frequently had peanut butter and honey sandwiches too.

Same here, it was a staple snack. And that was California. I think it's fairly common really.

And BP/honey was a school lunch staple, especially in the summer. I loved it when the honey soaked into the bread and sat a while, the bread would get sorta crunchy. Wonder how many here will be grossed out by that... :)

i've recently splurged on some welches grape jelly from dj's food hall and found reece's pb at bondi junction.. so i've been bringing pb&j sandwhiches to work pretty reguarly. it's cute to see people's curiosity and reactions. if anyone wanted to try, i woulldn't mind and they'd probably be hooked! and (on an offnote) i brought some taco dip to work a few weeks ago and everyone loved it! it's been recommended i bring more american food to work next time we do a lunch. maybe i'll bring cut up pb& j's haha.

Further to that point... jelly = jam and gelatin = jelly, so if you say "Peanut butter and jelly", an uninitiated Aussie might imagine a sandwich made of PB and Jello. :rollin:

LOL... Yeah, PB and Jello would gross out even me, and I'm known to be not too fussy about what I eat...
Thanks for the heads up on that!

A friend of mine did that when she was younger. She got back from a Hawaiian vacation recently and misses America.

Haha. Reminds me when we were living back in Australia and I had a banana and peanut butter sandwich for lunch. Everyone at work was making comments how gross it was and couldn't believe the combination. I found it quite bizarre how much they were going on about it! I also had sliced apples dipped in peanut butter and this was seen as equally gross! :P I can't relate to their love of Vegemite! :P
