I hardly ever buy cosmetics. I usually don't care about looking like an art school vagrant, but I'm going to be looking for jobs soon, so.

For the makeup-wearers reading this: which products do you regularly buy in Australia? Most of the brands are the same in both places, I think, but I'm curious about which products you consider worthwhile. I just like hearing what works for different people. :)

As for me, I'm really happy with the Everyday Minerals samples I got, and am considering a larger order. They ship to Australia pretty cheaply. Is this worth it or should I look for inexpensive mineral makeup once I'm back over there?

i know nothing about mineral makeup, so can't help with that. but i do like my makeup and beauty products :)
if you go back to the states regularly, i would strongly suggest buying over there. makeup here is so expensive.. it's one of the first things i noticed when i came over and noted to stock up on return trips to the states.

plus, a lot of brands aren't available here. but things are slowly becoming more available (depending on where you live). they have mecca cosmetica in sydney and i think they might be opening a sephora, but not sure.

as for australian brands, i don't really use makeup brands, but use skincare or hair/body care ranges more. like alchemy (for hair care) and trilogy (love rosehip oil). also love lucus paw paw ointment. qv makes some good products that you can get at the chemist as well. they have a lovely face scrub. you can even get jurlique products at the chemist and some more upmarket beauty lines too.

for your original question.. i am not really loyal to one makeup brand. i pick and choose which products to spend more on. for me, that is foundation. i use chanel and giorgio armani. mascara too i spend more on, with my picks being chanel and dior. but i get inexpensive eye shadows and liners. i am loyal to covergirl smoothslicks (i think they are called?) eye liners. they are great! and have a fav rimmel eye shadow duo and a maybelline quad i stick with. natio makes good eye shadows as well and i really like mac eye shadows too. i love my makeup :)

Steph - I agree with I love Sydney - buy your stuff in the States if you can. It's INSANELY expensive here!

I have use Bare Escentials mineral makeup for going on 6 years now and I love it. I've not tried other brands though so I cannot compare. You can get it here but it's expensive. You can try some online companies though - like Strawberry Net, The Facial Company etc.

I also get Lancome, Dermalogica, Laura Mercier and Nars from the States. But I'm in my 40s and need all the help I can get! Ha ha.

Good luck!

Just to ive you an idea... Clinique foundation here is $49. I get it at home for $20. Yeah. THAT expensive. OPI nailpolish can be anywhere from $16-26 bottle. $7 at home. It's a bit crazy. Buy what you can back home, whatever kind you decide on. Hit up a department store and try a few things out. They'll be supereager to help - especially if you genuinely are looking for new products. Might even score more free samples.

I have never worn a lot of make up but feel like I need more in my old-er age ;) so I can appreciate not wanting to look like you are wearing a mask or waste precious time and money. I am no professional, however.

I've used mineral make up and like it when my skin isn't too dry, but I would NOT recommend doing the cheap versions. I tried Maybelline after using Bare Escentuals/BareMinerals and found it to be horrible.

I also found that I like Loreal True Match foundation more than the other expensive brands I've tried over the years. Buy it somewhere that will take it back if you get the wrong color and you are golden. Otherwise, you might be a bit too golden : ) I noticed that Target often does 40% off make up, so if you aren't rushed for time and want the cheaper brands you won't pay double. Or just buy it in the US of course!

I use Kiehls moisturizer and love it. I keep trying other brands and go back to this one because it seems to work well when I actually use it like I should. I buy inexpensive mascara and like the fuller brushes. Maybelline, Loreal, doesn't matter much to me, but I know many people who swear by Estee Lauder mascara.

I use Clinique blush and eyeshadow because they are more reasonably priced than other department store brands and seem to stay put longer than the drugstore brands I've also used. It feels like a crapshoot sometimes, even after looking over "don't go to the cosmetics counter without me". I started using some of these products after reading that book and I've cut down on the make up bill, which is always nice.

Ditto to everything that's been said as far as expensive make up here. I also stock up when I'm back in the states or get my family to send me certain things.

Have you checked out www.strawberry.net they have great prices on most high end make ups and shipping is free...only thing is some of their make up not all colours or products are available, but I was able to find most of my foundation/primers/blushes on there.

I just bought some new makeup 2 weeks ago and it was a Aussie brand, and I must say I was very happy with it. Austalis. Resonable priced. The foundation made my skin feel lovely and the eyeliner doesn't smudge! I would definitely recommend trying Australis products.

Thank you for the advice, everyone! I'm 24, so cheap products will do the job sometimes, though I don't think anybody should feel like they have to wear a mask ;)

I agree on the Aussie skincare/health products, there's some nice ones. Lucas pawpaw ointment is good stuff! The only thing I've tried that I don't like is that eucalyptus natural deodorant ("Thursday Plantation") that makes me smell like I've already got body odor.

Strawberry Net is a useful find, thanks for pointing it out! Same goes for the reminder that Target runs sales on their products.

That's cool that the Australis brand worked out well, I might give their primer a shot.

Hi there - Lucky you to be 24!!

One good piece of advice I got when I was younger was that at some point it's a good idea to "invest" in some better products when budget allows -- mainly if you will be wearing some sort of makeup for a job. They usually last longer, and look nicer - so you don't end up wasting stuff, buying more and more things looking for the right product, etc. Kind of like not buying cheap shoes... When I was around your age I was working for a public relations agency, and I decided it was time to invest in some makeup as part of my "professional wardrobe". So I got some makeovers at some dept stores and bought some of what was used on me. Be careful if you do that though b/c you usually end up looking so amazing, and you can make an emotional purchase and spend too much money when they are pushing product!

The nice thing about Bare Escentials is that you can just put a super small amount on so it looks really natural, and there is SPF in it. Might be a good start to building up your makeup collection. That stuff lasts soooo long too - mine lasts well over 6 months if not a year for the foundation stuff. My face colour/blush stuff lasts years!! (Geez, I should get a job for them!)

Lancome definicils mascara is one that, for me, does not rub off and make me look like a raccoon. Apparently Loreal is the same formulation? Another good one is Maybelline -the pink one with the green top.

Eye shadow you probably don't need to worry about brands as much as those tend to be more trendy and you can get away with something less expensive, and what's "in" changes regularly. I have never used eyeliner so I cannot comment there.

Have fun!

I agree about the True Match - it is one of the nicest foundations I have ever tried... but I find that I wear less makeup here so my liquid foundation only comes out once a month to help me cover some pimples.

I also use mineral foundation - I've tried A LOT of them and my favourite is Mary Kay. It seems like such an old lady brand; but they have some great products... I also use their nude lip liner if I am going out and am wearing lipstick -mostly though I just use some gloss.

Mineral powder won't work with a dry face so I use Ponds lotion morning and night :) I love that stuff and I've been using it for years.

They rest of the stuff doesn't really matter - I rarely wear eyeliner; but I love me some mascara... I bought a CG tube @ Target right before we left the states (it was Orange)... Best mascara brush ever. I've saved the brush and use it with my other mascaras now. I like Loreal's eyeshadow quads and their plumping lip gloss - it doesn't actually plump; but it has great staying power....

I would highly recommend e.l.f. It's online order only (though, their products do sometimes show up at Target in the States), and you seriously cannot beat the price (most items are between $1 and $8 USD).

I was turned on to them by a friend who write a beauty blog. She suggested I try e.l.f. for my wedding. They have some great "look" pages, where they'll show you how to recreate a whole look, which was just what I needed. I used it for both my ceremonies in the States and in Australia, an now for everyday.

I love their eye shadows, blushes, and powders. Not so fond of the lip glosses, but I'm not really a lip gloss kind of girl.

I was about to say that I only wished they shipped to Australia, but as I was going to get the U.S. link, I see that they've opened up an Aussie site. Best news I've learned all week! Hooray!

I've tried countless make-up brands since moving here, and I've been happiest with these:

Mary Kay (Foundations & Face Powders) - I have really difficult, blemished skin that tends to get oily within half an hour. A lot of foundations don't even DRY on my skin as a result! Of everything I've used, the Mary Kay foundations and face powders have worked the best. They stay on well and don't clog my pores much.

Inglot (Eye Powders) - I *looooooooooove* Inglot! They have a TON of colours, and they're gorgeous. They stay on all day and look fabulous. I have three of their triple-colour compacts so far and am planning on getting more. The sales girls are really nice, too (unlike a certain other popular Australian cosmetics company that will remain nameless), and know their products really well.

Bare Escentuals is my fave as well. I'm running low and I've been wondering what I'll do when I run out! Ebay? I love Lancome' too!

I get mine from The Facial Company or something similar (online) here if I cannot get it from the States for some reason. The prices are still insane but when in Rome...

Totally agree! I love, love, LOVE Iglot! I only discovered it about a month ago when I was out shopping for MAC but came across this shop in a mall. Came across Inglot after seeing a review about it online and I agree with the reviews....better than MAC and less costly. I also use the eye powders and the really do stay on for a very long time. Use their eye primer and it really stays put and doesn't crease or give you "alligator lids" like I tend to get when I wear shadows. I love how you can build your own palettes of blushes and shadows. :)

Agree with what you said about the sales girls (and guys). They were very knowledgeable about makeup and the products. For a makeup lover, it's like a kid in a candy store. :p I am totally replacing all of my makeup with Inglot products. Though I'll hang on to the MAC brushes. (If you can afford the investment, it is SO worth it).

Sephora brand is really good too.

Can anyone recommend medium-to-heavy coverage foundation? I like Bare Escentuals too but it doesn't cover well enough. I'm also looking for anything waterproof so it won't sweat off when it's 40° or wash off when I go swimming.
