Trying to pick out a stand mixer and although I'd love to get a Kitchenaid, I don't feel like spending $700...any suggestions? The Kenwood one I was thinking of getting now has some bad reviews:( |

Sunbeam seems to be what they use on Masterchef and such. Oh, and if someone buys me a stand mixer, I will give you my firstborn child. |

I purchased a Thermomix two months ago and am loving it. Gerry Harvey would hate me as I refused to pay prices here and imported it from France for a thrid of the price here. Bit more expensive than my old one but hell I can go from the first ingredient to final cooking in the thing. |

I did something similar - I bought my KitchenAid in the states and had it shipped over. It's 6 qt and 575 watts, which isn't even available here. The mixer, plus shipping, PLUS the transformer to run it all cost less than buying a KitchenAid off the shelf here Sorry to hijack your thread, trix. Definitely go with the Sunbeam, I loved mine! It handled anything I threw at it, except multigrain bread - hence the need for the KitchenAid. |

Hi Trix mine is the TM31 and imported form France, the shipping costs being less than the GST I would have paid for here. PM sent on particulars. |

LOL thanks I have a super heavy duty old school transformer so I probably could import a Kitchenaid....just never seriously considered it! I have a breadmaker so not an issue on that front either. |

Hmmm now leaning towards importing a KitchenAid but wondering how to ship it as the box would be too large for regular post these days I think! |

I love that this thread is here. I have been looking at the KitchenAid mixers for a while now, but just can't bring myself to justify the $700+ pricetag here. For those of you who use US ones with a transformer, how long have you been doing that? Is the transformer quite heavy duty? I ask, because I understand that some power tools require a surge when they first start, so one with a high wattage rating may be necessary (like 3x the wattage of the appliance). If there is someone here who has been doing it for years and years, then that would certainly make me rest a bit easier. |

Hi All, I've done a little more research on bringing KitchenAid mixers over from the US, and there's a good discussion that occurs in the comments of the David Lebovitz blog. |

I have a seriously old school heavy duty transformer - probably decades old, and wouldn't use one of the smaller/cheaper ones...you need something quite good. |

I know, right? When you can get one for $199 in the US I can't understand the price difference. Yes, as it has a motor, you need at least 2x the wattage rating of the appliance, or it will just burn out. My transformer is quite heavy, I just leave it on the benchtop next to the mixer. As far as shipping, I bought mine when I was in the US and took it to a pack and ship place. I think Fedex or UPS will take oversize boxes Sorry I can't be more help there.
