Have you not come across Hellman's before, Missy? We have it at our local Coles, thankfully. :) Best Foods is the same as Hellman's, too.

Nah, have never seen Hellman's around here, but buy Best Foods all the time. It was just nice to see. :)

IT IS NOT!

When Best Foods acquired the Hellmann's brand, it was decided then that the respective recipes for both mayonnaises be preserved. Today, the two products are made in the same plant. However, at least as recently as June 2003, the recipes were almost, but not entirely, identical. From the company's FAQs at the time:

The products are basically the same. Both trademarks evolved simultaneously — Hellmann's in the East and Best Foods in the West. Taste preferences vary; some people find that Best Foods mayonnaise is slightly more tangy.[4]

Both labels contain the same ingredients in the same 'relative quantity' order: soybean oil, water, whole eggs & egg yolks, vinegar, salt, sugar, lemon juice, calcium disodium EDTA, and natural flavors. Best Foods' may contain more lemon juice, though the ingredients rank ordered by volume are the same as Hellmann's.[2]

Maintaining the separate identities of both brands poses some unique challenges. Marketing campaigns for both products are identical; however, Hellmann's and Best Foods must make separate television commercials for each product and cannot utilize nationwide media to market their product.[5]

You're not alone, Kim. I was also under the impression they were one and the same.
Thanks for the info, Audra.

Despite this evidence, Kevin and I still have this argument every time we run out of mayonnaise.

You can get a very BIG jar at Costco for just a little more than what the regular size one costs at Safeway.

I'm astonished that people seem to be reacting as if it was hard to get Hellmann's in Australia or that it seems to be 'new' in many places!

We've had Hellmann's at the local Coles here (Canberra) for as long as I can remember. I know this for a fact because I worked there for seven years in the late 90s and early 2000s, and we had it then. And I can definitely remember having it in the kitchen cupboard as a kid here in Australia too. :headscratch:

I didn't even know it was a particularly 'American' product before I saw this thread. In fact if anything most Aussies would think it's British due to the Royal Warrant on the packaging (which is visible in the photo in this thread).

Well, it IS hard to get it where I live. Not every place in Australia is like Canberra, with your sub-zero temps and fancy-shmancy British mayonnaise. :rollin: :p

I'm learning a lot here already! :woohoo:

1) I had no idea there were Safeway stores in Oz.
2) Best foods is my FAVE mayo. I can't stand the sweetness of Aussie mayo, it reminds me of Miracle Whip (ick).
3) I can't wait til Costco opens it's doors so I can get a huge jug of good old American style mayo! :yaay: The reason I haven't bought any yet is because I just can't bring myself to spend $10 on a 32 oz (or whatever ml or g that is) jar.

Safeway and Woolworths are the same company and I think the Safeway name is gradually being phased out and repaced with Woolworths name. There are both Safeway and Woolworths stores on Melbourne and they are pretty much the same inside.

best foods tastes a bit different to me.. and it looks different too.
on the topic of mayo.. before hellmans started popping up all over in places like coles i tried a bunch of mayos and found some lovely south american mayo and there is a lovely japanese mayo too. unfortunately, i don't know the specific brand names. the south american one is yellow, comes in a pouch and i think has a lemon on it somewhere.

anyway.. i find since moving here i rarely use mayo that much. i prefer fresh avocodo spread on my sandwiches. yum!

Hehe, it's funny. The way you think of Canberra is the way Canberrans think of everywhere else...

We're like a big country town that Sydney and Melbourne looks down on as a middle-of-nowhere backwater in terms of the availability of products. We Canberrans would normally be the ones saying "can't get <X> here in Canberra! Not every place in Australia is like Sydney with its <fancy schmancy <X>>!" :rollin:

While the age old war between Canberra and the two towns that lost out on being the Capital of Australia continues, I'll just go back to separating my egg yolks for my home made mayo. Let's see... should I add a bit of Dijon for a bit of zip? Or would that be too Fancy Schmancy?

Yes, I'm sure it comes as a shock to learn that there are even smaller, more backwater places in Australia than the metropolis of Canberra. :p Although, we Territorians of the Northern variety do have something that no one else has: legal fireworks! (on one day of the year, anyway  )

Sorry, what were we talking about again...mayonnaise? Yes. What I find kinda interesting is that our local Woolies also sells Miracle Whip. I've never tried the Aussie version, but the ingredients are more or less the same as those in Aussie mayo. Does it taste the same, too?

Okay. I'll bite. I'm not a lover of US mayo, and I PREFER MIRACLE WHIP. And I've had Aussie mayo and it's not the same at all.
