or..... 'hypothetically' you could order a child safety kit from ebay for $10, use the fingerprint ink with it and take your own, scribble a signature in the officers name box and send it off to the FBI. Hypothetically of course...i've heard it works pretty well....hypothetically. |

I've seen things online where it says it costs upwards of $175 to get fingerprints done here in Oz...BUT, I think it's helpful to clarify to the police that you only need the prints for an FBI check, NOT the national background check (unless you actually need that too). I haven't been here long enough to need the Australian background check, and that's the thing that is very costly. Unfortunately, not all the police realize the difference when you go ask for visa fingerprints, and some of them won't do ink prints at all. The officer I spoke with in Dee Why was very helpful - they were a little more confused in Mona Vale and Bondi! The thing I'm wondering about is the State level checks. I've been in NSW for four months now, and don't have a US address anymore. A girl I met recently just got her temp residency, and said she only did FBI, never the state fingerprint clearance. The directions about state clearances are kind of vague. Is the FBI check enough, or should I do the CA state one as well (it's even more of a hassle than the FBI, which is why I'd love to avoid it if I can). |

aquathest, where are you getting the fingerprints done by the AFP? I am in a similar boat - onshore in Australia but need fingerprints taken for my FBI check. |
