Adelaide seems pretty clean.
In Adelaide, commuters stand in single file lines along the sidewalk, waiting for the bus to come...

We had friends come up from Sydney (life long Aussies who never made it up to QLD before) and they LOVED how clean and graffiti free the Gold Coast is.

Littering is also a hugely big issue for me as well... I was walking onto a beach in NSW once and a group of school children was walking out (year 6-7-ish) and one of the kids threw his empty bottle into a bush. I stopped and said "Excuse me young man but you dropped your bottle." He looked at me - his teacher looked at me and he quickly reached his hand into the bush and grabbed out his bottle. :) I'm a one person crusader I tell ya! haha

I'm also Native American and back in the 70's there was the ad campaign with the Native man crying. I remember thinking how mean it was that those white people would make my uncle cry because they couldn't stop littering.
I totally remember that commercial!!! That and Smokey the Bear.

I guess I come from a super clean part of America~we had our share of litterbugs but then the volunteer crews that would adopt areas to clean took care of that. It's really sad that no one seems to give a rip around here, it's a nice suburb. We get litter on our lawn!!! Fast food wrappers, cookie boxes, bottles...unbelievable.

This is funny to me after we've been house hunting. I'll just say that I've totally changed my attitude about HOAs:) I have seen a lot of trash and used-up furniture, but mostly buried in jungle-like overgrowths in people's front yards, or rather "gardens."

I haven't noticed trash so much, however, I am constantly in awe that so many people destroy their front lawn parking on it when there is ample space on the street. I know that some places do not have much street parking, but in my neighborhood it is plentiful and I see cars on lawns ALL the time. Strange to pay more than 700K for a home only to thrash the front yard with your car to save a few steps. Wild.

OMG you should have seen it in Canberra!! Never in my life had I seen such a thing - multiple cars parked on the front lawn. It used to drive me crazy. I just don't get it!

I think the trashissue is the lack of rubbish bins on trains, train platforms, and streets. I was told they used to have bins everywhere but they were removed for fear someone could hide a bomb in one. I am disgusted that people can't carry their trash off the train with them.

Yeah - that one gets me too. I walked into the train station with an ice cream cup and only realized once I was on the platform that there was no way to toss it out. Back up all the stairs, inquired of the guard, and was told it's "for security". Had to go all the way out of the station to find a trash bin.

Far better in my opinion thsn getting stopped, called out in public, and having your bag searched "for security" every other time you use the metro.

Give me a shortage of bins any day.

This is because it's either not legal to park on the street, or because on narrow suburban streets, people are worried about getting their car sideswiped by some drunk bogan driving around at 3 in the morning.

I park on the lawn rather than on the street at my parents place when I visit for instance. Parking on the street places me right where the person across the road would back out from their driveway, and I don't want to risk getting my car damaged. Minor residential streets here are generally not particularly wide.

Canberra people use Macs Reef Road to get down to the coast. You can always tell when the drongos have stopped in Dickson for a snack at Maccas, as the drive up the Federal Highway takes just about that long to scarf down their saturated fats and dump the bags & debris onto Macs Reef Road... Just like clockwork... The brainless pigs..

We lived in Dickson for 18 months (10 minute or so walk to that McDonalds) and I was astounded by the amount of fast food trash (and bourbon and coke cans) littering the ground everywhere!

Are there that many drunk bogans to be worried about?
