That's because United sucks so bad they have to have cheap flights so ppl will use them. |

LOL! Well, I had one flight that would sure confirm that, but really, most have been decent. Of course, having not flown with anyone else, I wouldn't know any better... |

Well.... Got declined for the United FF card, so went to see about buying miles to extend what I have. Sure isn't cheap, in fact, it appears to be almost as expensive as actually making the flight. So, just went to price a flight to see how far off I currently am, and saw they've raised the FF miles needed yet again, from 80k to 120k miles! ![]() Looks like we will not be together for our 3rd anniversary...

That sucks....I hate United!!! Can you use the points you have on a partner airline? Or use them to get you part way here? I know there isn't a whole lot of places between OZ and the US...Hawaii? |

It's 40k FF miles for a one-way down, but a one-way back costs more than a round trip ticket without any FF miles... I've got a bit over 44K miles, to use miles and cash, I need something over 54k miles. So I'm going to call and verify if I buy some miles, it'll extend the expiration, and use them here. I've got a chance of a lifetime coming up end of the year, being allowed to visit my grandfather's homestead site near Death Valley which has been buried deep in a high security Naval test range since the 1940's. And a museum in a nearby town has a lot of info on him. So I'm going to try and use the miles toward a motel and car rental. Got to get -some- use out of them.... Since I'm hoping to be making the move not too many months after our anniversary, and still really don't know how I'm going to pay for that, we've just decided to pass, and focus on getting me moved. Someone starting to accumulate miles right now would need to make 8 round trips to get close, and would probably still have to buy some miles to get a flight. Grrr..... Air New Zealand has reasonably priced one way flights. |

I did notice that, and will probably use them when I make my one-way trip next year. Heck, even if it's a bit more, be nice if at least one of my flights was enjoyable... But my comment on one way flights was that I can get down there with the miles I have now, but that's a one-way trip. I'd have to buy a one-way ticket home and that would cost more than a round trip with no miles. And I'm over 10k miles short of a round trip with miles -and- cash. Right now it's 40k miles down, 80k miles back, 120k total. Crazy... |

Interesting, got another email pitch to take advantage of my FF miles for things other than flying, and noticed, my miles now expire November of next year! Hmm.... I was going to buy the minimum miles to extend the deadline beyond this month, and use them for lodging and car rental in December. (My sister and I are going to be granted access to our grandfather's homestead site near Death Valley, which has resided deep in a highly secure Naval test range since the 1940s!) I wonder if my application for the Chase FF card, though denied, has anything to do with this, or if the expiration date is just there to encourage folks to use them up ASAP instead of accumulating enough for free flights? |

Instead of buying miles which is costly, to extend the deadline for redeeming your current miles, you can donate a minimum of 1,000 and get a year extension. Call your Mileage Plus customer service number and you can make a mileage donation to a number of charities. https://secure.unitedmileageplus.com/CharityMiles.jsp?navSource=MPFooter&linkTitle=c2.5 |

Waynec, I'd mentioned in another post, without explanation, my miles now expire November, 2012! I don't have many to spare. But thank you for mentioning this. IF I ever accumulate enough to to use, I'll donate the extras. And if I never do, I'll donate them all. Jon |
