Australian TV Dramas; Why do they all get cancelled so quickly?

Not that I watch TV all that much (I do have a PhD to write...), but I would like to watch Australian series instead of American ones - except they all seem to be getting cancelled! City Homicide, Sea Patrol, and Rescue Special Ops have all ended this year and Rush will probably be next. Besides Wild Boys that just started last week, what else is there besides the two soaps? I imagine it's because buying American shows is cheaper and faster than producing new series here, but I would really like to watch Australian actors (with Australian accents!) filmed in Australia, you know?

If you're looking for good Aussie drama, ABC and SBS are your best bet. East West 101, Swift and Shift, Crownies - just some of the ones we watch. The commercial networks are all about ratings and the bottom line, and sadly, reality shows have the best profit margin these days. :(
(for example, Border Security, The Force, RPA, and The Farmer Wants A Wife - all 100% Aussie-made - have been running for yeeeeears and no sign of slowing down)

That said, though, they are pushing the latest Underbelly series (on Nine) quite heavily. Have you seen that one?

Razor (Underbelly's) been getting great reviews from my friends. Some of the shows seem to do well, but they space them out almost like mini-series. Swift and Shift is so rediculous. Lol. Can't help but watch it.

Thanks for the suggestions! I haven't checked out Underbelly since the commercials made it seem way too violent.

Its a symptom of the times I think - instant gratification and instant profit is the name of the game. As Tors said, reality shows have taken over due to larger profit margins, and new shows are not given a chance to succeed - if they dont rate in the first 2 or 3 episodes they are canned.

We saw it here in the US a couple of years ago and it got so bad that I stopped watching new shows because I got so frustrated with them being taken off the air without any warning. That being said I think its been a little bit better this last season.

Certainly happens all over. I started watching a BBC show called Outcasts on BBC America and totally got into it only to find out it got cancelled in the UK. I watched it to the end and thoroughly enjoyed it but was totally dissatisfied when I saw the final episode to be aired as it really did leave the audience hanging.

I feel mixed about this. Sometimes shows go on waaaaay too long. While I ADORE Dexter, it's almost to the point of what more can they do? 2 and 1/2 men (ugh). Also British shows tend to have shorter seasons. Season 1 of Misfits had 6 episodes!! Sherlock Holmes was only 3 movie length shows! Totally agree with Tors about ABC and SBS. Awesome shows on there.

I haven't started watching any new American shows in the past few years either because I figured they would just end up getting cancelled too soon. I really hate when the final episode is not a real series finale. Rescue was doing really well in the ratings so I was surprised it got axed (and replaced with American shows!). At least Sea Patrol got a real ending; Rescue's final episode was awful since the writers left the storylines open for a 4th season. Totally agree about some shows being on for way too long though. Season 12 of CSI, seriously??

I'm getting re-addicted to NCIS. We recently finished re-watching The West Wing (both been fans since the start).

Really? I enjoy several of them, along with UK programs as well. Some Aussie shows aren't all that and a bag of chips, but many US shows suck as well. It seems like the 'free to air' channels cannot come up with anything new. CSI, CSI Miami, CSI New York, Law and Order, Law and Order SCU, Law and Order LA! At least HBO and AMC are stepping up and putting some good stuff out: Dexter, True Blood, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones.

All the best shows are on the Internet these days anyway!!

I've watched a few episodes of "Spirited" on W and I'm intrigued. I can't wait for the cable to get hooked up. I've been without TV for a while and I'd almost welcome a few episodes of Two and Half Men. Almost.

Packed to the Rafters is a great Aussie show channel 7 Tuesday nights 8:40pm.
Offspring (between seasons back '12) is meant to be good, I honestly haven't seen much of it as I have been in America but I know lots of people who love it.

I've also been watching 'The Slap' on Thursdays. Not bad, so far. The first one had me on the edge of my seat!

There is a book group on here and I think they read The Slap to mixed reviews. I'm LOVING the show. And I agree - GREAT acting and very believable, if not sad, characters. I'm finding it hard to like anyone in particular in the show - except maybe Aisha - but there does seem to be a sense of "real" to it. I can imagine something like this tearing apart a family, not to mention a family already on tenterhooks.

Add me to the list of those that love Offspring!

What I find irks me is that they start a show...run it for 6 weeks-ish and then take it off for a couple of months before bringing it back on again. It happens with American shows too. Bugs the hell out of me!

Ooh, a book group? I haven't come across that yet. Tell me more!
