I have not been able to find any Black Beans? Do they go by another name here or something? I really love it here but it is getting super frustrating when I want to make recipes and can't get the ingredients that I need :$

Thanks for that. I didn't even think of health food shops. I wonder why they aren't just on the shelf at Coles with all the other beans? Weird.

I buy dried black beans at my local market. If you have a big fruit/veggie type market with a nuts/grains shop like those in melbourne, try there : )

Absolutely not true! I'm Australian and I eat beans, so therefore Australians eat beans.

Also, I've bought black beans at "ethnic" markets in Perth.

Black beans are sometimes called turtle beans here. I can easily find dried black beans and blackeyed peas sold in bulk at the markets but I have never seen these sold in cans here.

:rollin: Now that was funny Indy

I guess the growing up with baked beans and filling up just before a camping trip in one tent with mates was not as popular as I thought :headscratch:

There is a little market in Newtown in Sydney that has a shelf of Mexican food - it's called Fiji Market and I go there for:

Black beans (canned), tomatillos, jalepenos, chipotles, hot sauce and dried chiles

They don't carry mild green chillis though and that's driving me nuts!! - I can't find them anywhere :(

They only time I've seen them canned is at Go Vita, a natural foods shop. There's probably one near you. Also have a look at Asian grocers or other international markets, I regularly find dried black beans (as noted, sometimes called turtle beans) and pinto beans.

The relocationist told me we couldn't bring food in our shipment, but I told her we couldn't live without our Mexican food stash. So, she relented. I'm bringing bags of dried black beans, pinto beans, canned green chilies, bottles of my husband's favorite extremely hot sauces--because the supermarkets I had time to pop into during our brief pre-move visit to the Hunter Valley only had a teeny tiny shelf of Mexican food.
So, Mexican food lovers who aren't in a huge city, what do you do? I'm thinking if we send a good-sized stash on the slow boat (think three or four moving boxes full! ) and then require all our visitors to bring a case of whatever we've run out of . . . we might just make it.
I only saw Pace picante sauce on the supermarket shelves--and I know I can't sneak seeds for peppers into the country, so are seeds or starts for spicy peppers/chiles available? I don't want the sniffer dog to rat me out.
What other Mexican food necessities aren't readily available if you don't live in a large city? I could justify a monthly trip to Sydney for a carful of Mexican food, especially because the kids and I can transition to fond remembrances of times past, but honestly, my husband will go bonkers.

I can grow most anything, but are seeds or starts for spicy peppers readily available? I don't want the sniffer dog to rat me out, so I don't think I should dare bring seeds in my soap dish 8)
However, a monthly trip to Sydney could be justified--if I can fill a car (and trailer!) with basic Mexican food ingredients!

Not to be politically incorrect, but I hear a lot of "pommies" don't really eat beans - maybe that's why they don't have them over there?

AS for me, I absolutely LOVE black beans, OMG - have you guys tasted the Mexican black bean pizza with the jack cheese? lol - mmm, gotta get your Superbowl treats ready!!

I think AmbroseChick's husband was just pulling our collective legs.

Of course they eat beans here. Lots and lots of beans. Borlotti beans, butter beans (I think these are the same as lima beans), red beans, chick peas, etc. Black beans and pinto beans are not as common, but you can still find them if you know where to look. (some Asian grocers carry them)

And let's not forget the most common 'bean' of all, baked beans! Whoever said that the - ahem - English don't eat beans?? Baked beans are an integral part of the full English breakfast!
